Samsung Exynos recalls that its latest chip is already capable of supporting 200 megapixel sensors on smartphones. But for now, this is not teasing, although rumors are already circulating about a new sensor.
Today, Samsung is a leading supplier of cameras for smartphones (both its own and models from other brands). And one of Samsung’s flagship ISOCELL products is its 108-megapixel sensor, which is now used by Samsung and Xiaomi devices.
High pixel counts alone do not guarantee camera quality. However, with a technique called pixel bining, significant improvements can be made. Essentially, it involves combining multiple pixels in order to capture more light in low light, while taking full advantage of the high resolution when the light conditions are good.
After 108 megapixel sensors, 200 megapixel sensors?
The Galaxy S21 Ultra uses a new generation 108 megapixel main. But currently, rumors are already circulating about new Samsung sensors that will have an even higher pixel count.
And in a post on Twitter, Samsung Exynos (the subsidiary specializing in Samsung chips), surfs on these rumors. “[…] what do you most expect from a smartphone camera? “, We can read in the tweet. This is accompanied by a video promoting Exynos products, and mentioning the possibility of having smartphones with a 200 megapixel sensor, or with a set of six sensors.

In another tweet, however, Samsung clarified that this is not a teaser (neither for a new smartphone nor for a new camera). “Relax! This is not a teaser. The # Exynos2100 already supports a sensor up to 200Mp with a multi-camera setup, ”the Samsung Exynos Twitter account said.
As a reminder, the Exynos 2100 is Samsung’s latest high-end chip for the 2021 flagships. This component is the equivalent of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 and is used by some versions of the Galaxy S21.
In any case, if Samsung specifies that the Exynos tweet was not a teaser, this post reminds that the SoC Exynos 2100 could support a 200 megapixel camera if it was available.
Samsung: a 200 megapixel camera in the pipes?
As I mentioned above, rumors are already circulating about the next sensors that Samsung ISOCELL could offer. And among these rumors, some specifically evoke a 200 megapixel camera.
For example, in January, Ice Universe, a source of “leaks” which is regularly relayed by the media, indicated: “Samsung ISOCELL will launch many innovative sensors in 2021. 200MP is coming soon. “If Samsung launches this sensor, it should allow the manufacturer to improve the technique of pixel bining, to optimize photos in low light.
Rumors are already circulating on the web … on a ZTE smartphone
By the way, there is also a rumor that this 200 megapixel sensor from Samsung could be used by the Chinese brand ZTE. After making the buzz thanks to the invisible front camera of the ZTE Axon 20 5G, the Chinese brand could once again be talked about thanks to this main sensor.
But of course, for the moment, all this information is not yet official. And caution is therefore always in order. In any case, this year, Samsung ISOCELL should logically offer new innovations for smartphone cameras.
