The health crisis that started at the beginning of the year has led many companies to adapt in order to continue to operate. This week, several of them unveil their quarterly results, which shows the impact of the pandemic on part of the economy. For some, the consequences have been positive, such as Netflix which exploded the number of new subscribers in the first quarter.
A 1,000% increase for videoconferences on Microsoft Teams in March
Like Netflix, Microsoft announced good quarterly results to the point of exceeding analysts’ expectations. Indeed, the group posted a total turnover of 35.02 billion dollars on the quarter whereas the analysts counted on 33,66 billion. This represents an increase of 15%. The American company’s net profit is $ 10.75 billion or $ 1.40 per share. This compares to 8.81 billion over the same period last year.
If Microsoft has achieved such results, it is mainly thanks to teleworking consequent to the pandemic. For several weeks, many countries have confined populations, so that many people work from home. Logically, the use of collaborative tools has greatly increased. The number of videoconferences organized on Teams increased sharply by 1,000% in March alone, the firm said.
Satya Nadella said: “From telework to sales, education, cloud infrastructure and security – we work alongside our customers to help them adapt and stay open in a all-distance world. ” In April, the Microsoft Teams platform reached 75 million customers, while previous March figures peaked at 44 million. According to the CEO of Microsoft, Teams had a record day when more than 200 million users connected.
In comparison, it’s Microsoft’s cloud computing tool that fell slightly in the last quarter. Azure rose to 59% against 62% increase in the second fiscal quarter.
Microsoft’s stock gained about 5% in after-hours trading.
On the tech side, Tesla also surprised by announcing that it would be profitable for the third consecutive quarter, which had never happened before.
